About Prospect and Bectu

Prospect is a leading trade union that delivers advice, support, representation, and a voice for our members. We are a not-for-profit organisation with over 250 staff helping to support more than 150,000 people in specialist, professional and technical roles across the private and public sectors. Prospect members work in a diverse range of professions, including energy, science, engineering, heritage, defence, entertainment and digital.

The Bectu sector of Prospect is the union for creative ambition representing over 40,000 staff, contract and freelance workers in the media and entertainment industries. We prioritise an organising approach to build collective strength and win for our members.

The Role of Negotiation Officer

Prospect is looking for a Negotiations Officer to join our London Production Division team in the Bectu sector, based in our headquarters in Victoria, London. The London Production Division team supports members working in TV and film production across London and the South East, the vast majority of who are freelance.

This role will support and advise branches and members to meet their needs and ensure successful outcomes through providing individual and collective representation. Helping to identify, train and develop representatives and contributing to our national campaigning and networking activities will be a key part of the post.

You will also be involved in expanding the coverage of collective bargaining, dealing effectively with personal casework, building, and maintaining effective and resilient branch relationships and structures.

Prospect is a great place to work - this role has access to our high-quality defined benefit pension scheme and up to 33 days annual leave each year. We offer a good work-life balance, flexible working options and offer support for training and development. Due to the working nature of members in this area, evening and weekend work will be required. Time off in lieu is available.

Diversity is a core value of the trade union movement, and we are passionate about promoting equality at work and are committed to it for all staff; therefore, we would be particularly interested in applications from groups that are underrepresented in the workplace.

Essential

  • Good written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with colleagues, representatives, members, and employers.
  • Ability to act calmly and professionally in negotiations.
  • Good understanding of employment law.
  • Strong planning, organising, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and be prepared to take ownership when dealing with difficulties such as when negotiating with employers and providing advocacy.
  • Ability to develop branch capabilities for organisation and recruitment and to work on specific issues-based and general recruitment campaigns.
  • Ability to manage personal autonomy whilst also working well as part of a team and across boundaries to sustain relationships with employers, groups of members and colleagues.
  • Desire to make the world of work better for everyone through promoting membership and the values of the trade union movement.

Desirable

  • Good IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office/365 suite, Outlook and Teams.
  • Project management and/or campaigning experience.
  • Valid UK driving licence.

You will receive an annual incremental salary increase until the maximum of the scale (£69,209) is reached.
